Starlink Expands Rooftop Dish Install Service to 35 US States

The service costs $199 and pops up when you buy the hardware on Starlink.com. But the offering has raised concerns about taking business away from third-party satellite dish technicians.

To drive more sales of Starlink, SpaceX is expanding its satellite-installation service from 12 states to 35. The option appears if you try to buy a Starlink dish on the residential plan.

The add-on service costs $199, and involves SpaceX partner DSI Systems sending a technician to handle the rooftop installation. Customers who purchase the service will also need to pay for an additional mount, which can range from $38 to $74, to install the dish.

An updated Starlink support page lists the states where the $199 rooftop installation service is being offered, including Arizona, California, Illinois, Kansas, Pennsylvania, and Washington.

Although Starlink is easy to set up, permanently installing a satellite dish on a rooftop requires more work and tools; it's also potentially dangerous. As a result, many consumers hire third-party technicians to help them install Starlink dishes on homes and buildings.

Last year, SpaceX began offering its own rooftop installation service through DSI, first in four US states and then 12. The $199 service addresses a hurdle for some consumers who are hesitant about adopting Starlink. SpaceX is now expanding the service across the US as it tries to drive more sales through new discounts, including a residential lite service and even offering consumers a free Starlink dish, as long as they commit to signing up for a year.

However, the rooftop installation service risks taking away business from third-party dish installers, who charge between $275 and $500. They're also concerned the installs from DSI prioritize speed over quality.

In April, SpaceX offered free or discounted rooftop installs for new consumers in North Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia. It seems to have ended that offer, but it’s possible SpaceX is considering free rooftop installations. The checkout page currently says buyers can "have Starlink permanently installed at your residence for free," though it still adds $199 to your cart. It is a mistake? A teaser? We'll have to see.

My experience with Starlink internet service has NOT gotten off to a good start. I ordered the hardware kit on December 5th. The same day, I emailed their contractor, DSI Systems, to send me an appointment time for installation. The hardware was delivered the next week on the 9th, but I had not yet received an email reply with an installation date, so I called their phone number. The representative told me the tech would be at my house on Monday, the 22nd, to install the system. One week before the installation, DSI contacted me and asked if they could come on the 19th, 3 days early. I said, "Sure, I'll be waiting." The 19th came and went with no one showing up... not even a phone call to say they weren't coming. I called DSI and asked what happened. They said they would have the technician call me that evening. He never called. I called back the next morning. They didn't have an answer for why he didn't return my call, but wanted to set another appointment for January 5th between 1-6 PM, another 18-day wait. I told them that wasn't acceptable because the original appointment was Monday the 22nd, 3 days away, and they should still honor that appointment. They said they couldn't do that because that appointment time was given to someone else after they scheduled me earlier. I was upset, but what could I do? So yesterday, Jan 5th rolled around. Just like the first time, I had received no email or text reminder of the installation, so I called them yesterday morning to confirm the appointment. They told me that the technician's name was Joshua and he would arrive between 1 PM and 6 PM. Again, a no-show... and no phone call saying he wasn't coming. I called DSI at 6 PM yesterday and told them that, again, the technician was a no-show. They said they would have him call me and, again, he didn't. I called them back this morning and explained that if I wasn't retired and still had a job to go to, I would have to be taking off work to be here for these appointments. Every time the technician doesn't show up for an appointment, I would not get paid for that day. She was very apologetic and gave me another appointment for Wednesday, Jan 14th, saying that was all she could do. Adding to my frustration is the fact that all corporations doing business in the US have their customer service centers located somewhere in Indonesia or the Philippines. These are countries where English is not the first language and I was continually asking them to repeat phrases because I couldn't understand their English. On top of all this, I received an email from Starlink yesterday telling me it was their policy to start billing a customer 30 days after shipping the hardware, even if the hardware had not been installed and activated, so they were going to start billing me tomorrow, Jan 7th. I replied, asking them not to start billing me yet because the reason the system hasn't been installed and activated yet is beyond my control. If they don't honor my request, I will be billed for a service I'm not getting. Finally, I would just install this myself if it wasn't for the fact that the antenna has to be mounted on the roof of my house and I stopped climbing ladders years ago.
